Stylized Fantasy Flying Island

This project was my first experiment with hand painted texturing. It consists of 3,700 polygons (modeled in Blender) and three textures, all 100% hand painted in Substance Painter.
This project is based on a rough concept sketch I drew inspired by various video games and books from my childhood. In modeling I tried to generally stick to the original ideas from the concept, but I did end up adding a few elements and adjusting some details that I thought would improve on the concept. One large inspiration during the texturing stage was the weathered and detailed look of the castle from Howl's Moving Castle - it occurred to me partway through to use it as reference, so despite needing to change course a little bit as a result of this, I think it ultimately benefited the final result!
For the first image as well as the animation below, the rendering was very simple - I painted all shadows and ambient occlusion into the colormap, so there's no lighting necessary making it very lightweight on processing power.
For the night shot, I took the same model and textures and lit them using several different kinds of lights, with certain materials casting shadows and certain materials not. The final result isn't quite as clean as the daytime render, partly because the lighting makes the hard edges of the model visible - but it worked out better than I expected anyway!
